Auto Accidents Caused by Texting & Driving

Like many states, Pennsylvania law bans text messaging while operating a motor vehicle. Unfortunately, many drivers continue to send text messages or otherwise "multitask" while driving, which is extremely dangerous and can lead to serious accidents.

If you believe the other driver was texting and driving or otherwise preoccupied or distracted and caused an accident that led to injuries, you should speak with a distracted driving accident lawyer near you right away.

At The Law Offices of Anthony Urban, P.C., we are all too familiar with the aftermath of distracted driving accidents. We help car accident victims in Schuylkill County, Northumberland County, Carbon County, and the surrounding areas throughout Northeastern Pennsylvania recover compensation for their losses and hardships from these preventable accidents.

Common Types of Driver Distractions

While texting and driving is generally the most common and egregious distracted driving offense (read the section below to learn more about why), there are numerous ways a motorist can become distracted behind the wheel.

Daydreaming, gazing at the scenery, ruminating about something that made you mad at work, and changing your music all are potentially dangerous distractions that can lead to a serious accident.

Other forms of distracted driving include:

  • Talking on a hand-held cellphone
  • Reading a map or GPS
  • Turning to talk to passengers
  • Applying makeup or shaving
  • Eating or drinking
  • Reaching for objects on the floor or back seat
  • Pets riding on the dashboard or the front seat

To best avoid distractions, take care of everything you have to get done before leaving prior to getting in your car. Groom yourself, finishing drinking your coffee, and text your friend back before even turning on the engine. If you need to take care of something while operating your vehicle—for instance, let’s say your purse falls onto the floor or you need to take an important call—pull over before picking it up.

The Dangers of Texting While Driving

Driving requires two hands and full concentration, and anything that diverts the driver's attention from the road greatly increases the risk of an accident. Distractions come in three types: manual, visual, and cognitive.

Texting while driving is the most dangerous form of distracted driving because it combines all three forms of distractions at once. It diverts the eyes, the hands, and the driver's mental attention. The Centers for Disease Control and Prevention (CDC) has likened simply reading a text message while driving at 55 mph to driving across the length of an entire football field blindfolded.

Studies have shown that reaction times of texting drivers are as slow as drunk drivers. Delayed braking or swerving often translates to greater injuries in a collision. If we can prove that the driver involved in the accident was texting, that driver may be held liable for your serious injuries.
