Why Zantac Was Recalled by the FDA
In September of 2019, the FDA reported that NDMA had been detected in several brand name and generic heartburn medications on the market. This included Zantac, which had been widely prescribed to heartburn patients since the 1980s and was once one of the most popular pharmaceutical drugs in the United States.
In January 2020, the FDA recommended a comprehensive recall of ranitidine drugs. The recalls were voluntary, since not every single drug containing ranitidine has been found to contain dangerous levels of NDMA. However, most drugs have been removed from shelves for safety’s sake.
